What Does Your Smile Tell the World about You?

Posted on 6/15/2016 by Brandon Cooley
A woman happy with her newly repaired smile.Smiling is one of the first facial expressions that we use in life, and it is one of the most powerful communication tools that we have to offer the world. However, smiling doesn't just mean happiness.

There are a lot of different types of smiles out there that communicate different things, including:

•  The brief flash. If you are shy or nervous around people, you might just display a brief flash of teeth when you smile. This is a cautious smile that may signal that you aren't completely comfortable with your surroundings.
•  The genuine smile. A genuine smile is one that exposes most of your teeth, but the mouth isn't the only thing that should smile. A genuine smile will usually reach all the way to your eyes.
•  The sad smile. If you are feeling down about something but still want to acknowledge another person or something nice that they did, you might use the sad smile. It is slight and coupled with sad eyes, and it can also signal to others that you need help.
•  The empty smile. Deviating from the genuine smile is the empty smile, which may seem real at first, but fails to reach the eyes. You may be putting on a good face for your audience, but obviously have something going on under the surface.
•  The heartfelt smile. Sometimes known as the laughing smile, a heartfelt smile is a sign of a person who is confident, comfortable, and enjoys the company of the people around them.

It is important that you take the necessary steps to protect your smile, regardless of what emotion you are trying to convey. Regular brushing and flossing along with periodic dental visits are essential in order to keep your teeth healthy.

You should also remember that if at any time you are unhappy with your smile - whether this is due to crooked teeth, discoloration, or a broken tooth - contact our office to talk about your options.
