What Toothbrush Is Best?

Posted on 8/23/2016 by Brandon Cooley
A close up of several toothbrushes in a cup.The right kind of toothbrush can make a significant difference. It's size, shape, bristle strength, electric, manual, are all important questions.

Different variations of toothbrushes have existed for over 5000 years, their need recognized very early in history. Your dentist does have an opinion, and here are some things you should look for:

•  Cost - It is best to change your toothbrush frequently to reduce bacteria buildup, so choose a toothbrush that is reasonably cost for you.
•  Soft - Most dentists agree that choosing a soft bristled brush is best. Your job is to remove the soft film and loose food debris in your mouth, you are not trying to remove hardened tartar, leave that to the experts. Hard bristled brushes can damage your enamel and soft gum tissue.
•  Shape - Some patients like the angled head with tongue cleaner, some patients find that it gags them. This is a personal preference.
•  Manual - Manual toothbrushes are very effective. They are often cost effective and easy to use. Some patients prefer feeling in control of their technique.
•  Electric - Electric has been found in most instances to remove even more plaque. Children are often amused at electric toothbrushes encouraging them to brush. The downside is that patients have been found to decrease the time they spend brushing, and due to its expense, patients are not replacing the brush heads as frequently as they should.

When purchasing a toothbrush, be sure to note that it has be ADA approved. The American Dental Association has tried and tested toothbrushes for you and puts their stamp of approval of those they find effective. The best advice is to find the brush that you are willing to use frequently and replace often.
