What Kind of Damage Can Happen During an Extraction?

A woman suffering from pain after a tooth extraction.
When your dentist tells you that an extraction is the last resort, you need to believe them. They would rather do anything possible to save your tooth, than to pull it. This is because the entire experience can be traumatic for your mouth.

If the extraction doesn't go as planned, it can lead to pain and trouble in your mouth for a long time to come. The best thing to do is to get dental care as soon as you can when a problem comes up, so you can avoid getting an extraction.

How Extractions Can Cause Problems

If an extraction goes wrong, it can do a lot of damage. For example, the easiest way for a dentist to get a tooth out in most cases is to rock the tooth back and forth.

Once the tooth has enough room, the forceps can be lowered and the tooth can be pulled. During this rocking process, the bone that holds the tooth in place can be broken, and that can hinder how your mouth heals after the extraction.

It can also cause damage to the gums, and the surrounding teeth. It can leave you with cracks or breaks in your teeth, and it can leave you with pain that exists once the extraction is over. Ideally, you want to try and save the tooth whenever you can.

That is why your dentist is likely going to try and do a root canal prior to extraction in many cases. This can save the tooth, stop your pain, and keep your mouth healthy.

To find out more about extractions and why you want to avoid them, contact our office as soon as a problem comes up. That way, you know what your options are, and can pick the best solution for you.
