Top 5 Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Top 5 Causes of Tooth SensitivityIf you get a sudden shooting pain that seems to reach all the way up to the root of your tooth, you may be suffering from tooth sensitivity from hot or cold foods.

Air temperature can also be a culprit when it comes to tooth sensitivity, especially extremely cold weather.

Top Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

•  Gum recession - this is one of the most common causes of tooth sensitivity because as the gums recede more of the tooth is exposed and vulnerable to extreme temperatures in food or the outdoors. Gum recession is usually caused by gum disease or gingivitis that is left untreated and may develop into periodontal disease.
•  Bruxism - the clenching or grinding of teeth can wear down the tooth enamel, exposing inner layers of the tooth to the elements, which can cause tooth sensitivity.
•  Brushing too hard - is another reason the enamel gets damaged and worn-out, causing the dentin to become exposed and encourage receding gums.
•  Cracked teeth - if a tooth is cracked the bacteria from plaque can get inside and cause an inflammation in the pulp of the tooth, which in severe cases can lead to an infection or abscess.
•  Dental procedures - when you get a dental cleaning or a root canal, you may feel some sensitivity in your teeth in the days following the procedure, however, the symptoms should disappear within a few days.

It is important that you let us know if you have sensitive teeth, so we can diagnose you correctly and start treatment as soon as possible. In most cases there is an underlying cause for your sensitive teeth, but it is imperative that we get to the root of the problem without delay. The sooner we start with the treatment for your condition, the sooner you will feel better.
