![]() Small SmileThe good news is that most of the time, microdonts (small teeth) are not critically threatening to the mouth. This defect is typically caused by genetic inheritance; whether you received a big jaw from one parent and normal sized teeth from the other (relative generalized microdontia), have adult teeth that did not fully develop (localized microdontia), or were born with pituitary dwarfism that affects your teeth (true generalized microdontia), there are relatively few problems associated with having tinier teeth. The biggest risk to be on the lookout for are cysts and abscesses, which can form due to the unusual spacing of your mouth in the gaps. If you notice redness, inflammation, or pain around the gums or root, you may want to get examined by us to make sure you are not developing them. Left untreated, they could become filled with noxious pus and food particles, putting you at further risk of infections and worse threats to your health. If you are concerned about your microdonts, there are treatment options available. One option is to have composite build ups, to increase the size of the tooth. You may also be interested in crowns, which can help with appearances and encourage the tooth to grow fully, or even orthodontic treatment to help develop the tooth or remove extra teeth if your case is more severe. Regardless of your type of microdontia, if you have any concerns or questions, have noticed any oral health changes around the site, or would like to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment, please reach out to us. We would love to help you acquire a bigger, brighter smile! |
