Losing Teeth Directly Impacts Your Ability to Speak

Losing Teeth Directly Impacts Your Ability to SpeakThe teeth serve many important roles that extend past simply chewing your food. They also play a big part in your speech.

While talking may feel perfectly natural now, should you lose a tooth, you may notice problems with your speech. This is one of the many reasons it is so important to care for your existing teeth and to replace teeth that are lost.

How Losing Teeth Affects Your Speech

The teeth help us to produce many sounds. If you aren't convinced, stand up close to a mirror and try to talk. Pay attention to how your tongue and jaw move. You should notice that with certain pronunciations, the tongue presses directly into the teeth, specifically with these sounds:

•  TH sounds
•  F and V sounds
•  S and Z sounds
•  J and Zh sounds
•  M sound
•  N sound

Without the teeth, it would be extremely difficult to produce these sounds.

Aesthetics and Speech

As previously noted, missing teeth can affect your functional ability to speak, but you should also consider the aesthetic impact. Many people feel embarrassed to talk to friends, coworkers, and strangers due to missing teeth.

To try and hide the fact that a tooth is missing, they might mumble or speak quietly, or they may hide their mouth with their hand. Poor confidence due to missing teeth can limit a person both socially and professionally.

The Solution to Missing Teeth and Speech Issues

While it is ideal to prevent missing teeth before they occur, there are restorations available that can replace them. Dental implants are one of the most popular options because they offer long-term, permanent replacement. However, bridges and other restorations may also be options.

If you are interested in learning more about restorations for your missing teeth, give our office a call today. You deserve to speak freely and to have a smile that you are proud to show off.
