Does Stress Management Help Protect Your Teeth From Damage?Stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways, from stomach upset and sleepless nights to headaches and toothaches. In fact, reading about the physical manifestation of stress can be stressful in itself.

Worst of all is that you might be stressed without even recognizing that you are. If left unchecked, stress can be a trigger for a variety of health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and even heart disease. A lesser-known side effect of being stressed is the deterioration of your dental health. Here is how stress might be contributing to issues with your dental health.

Grinding Your Teeth


When stressed, many people grind their teeth. In some cases, they might do this even unconsciously, both in the daytime and at night while sleeping. As a result of the constant grinding and clenching of your teeth, you could start experiencing headaches, tight jaw muscles, and even the flattening or chipping of your teeth. 

This behavior also results in the constant use of your TMJ muscles. When overused, you may start experiencing pain on your TMJ muscle, which results in the TMJ disorder. Lastly, stress can easily lead to the neglect of your dental hygiene. When stressed, simple everyday tasks might seem too tiresome to deal with. 

Start With Recognizing The Reason For Your Stress


Some people tend to ignore the fact that they are stressed. As such, it can be hard to counter their stress and do anything to deal with it. The first step is identifying the reason behind your stress. If you can manage to deal with it, be sure to do so. Otherwise, visit a therapist or seek the help of a loved one.
