Is Bleeding on the Inside of Your Cheeks a Sign of Oral Cancer?
Posted on 8/23/2021 by Brandon Cooley
Some people worry when they start experiencing bleeding on the inside of their cheeks. You should have this checked, as it may be a sign of oral cancer.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer or mouth cancer refers to a cancer that develops in any part of the mouth or oral cavity. Therefore, mouth cancer can affect a patient's lips, gums, the inner lining of the cheeks, tongue, roof of the mouth, or the floor of the mouth under the tongue. Cancer developing inside the mouth is often called oral cavity cancer. Oral cancer is one of several types of cancer grouped under the classification of head and neck cancers.
When to See Us for an Oral Cancer Screening
You should have an annual screening done for oral cancer or see us when you notice any abnormalities inside the mouth or on your lips. For example, white or red patches signify a precancerous condition. Also, a diagnosis of oral cancer may be made if you have a lip or mouth sore that will not heal, have loose teeth, or a lump or growth inside your mouth. Other symptoms may include ear pain or mouth pain. Patients with oral cancer may also have problems with swallowing.
Talk to Us When You Still Have Symptoms after Two Weeks
While the above signs should be checked immediately, make an appointment if you have irregular signs or symptoms that last over two weeks. Sometimes, patients are suffering from an infection, while other times, a cancer diagnosis is made. Therefore, in either case, the condition needs to be investigated immediately. To screen for cancer, we may use a dye or light that reveals which cells or tissues are normal and which cells or tissues may be cancerous.
Make sure you have an oral cancer screening every year. Make it a part of your regular dental cleaning and exam. Call us today if you have not scheduled a professional cleaning or exam in the last six months.
