Dental Crown

A dental crown can provide additional strength and support to a tooth when needed. Additionally, crowns can be an ideal solution for other restorative work including covering dental implants or to stabilize a dental bridge. Using a dental crown, our team at Cooley Smiles can provide a strong and natural looking solution for restoring the aesthetic beauty to your smile.

We use a dental crown to cap a tooth, a dental implant, or as part of a dental bridge.

Encasing a Tooth

When capping a natural tooth, we are using the crown to serve as a protective layer, encasing the natural tooth. This is done when a natural tooth has become:
•  Broken: Teeth can become fractured, cracked or broken from impact injuries, biting down on something too hard, or if the tooth was weak. As long as there is sufficient tooth structure available, the ideal solution is capping the tooth with a dental crown.
•  Misshapen: A quick and easy way to perfect the look of your teeth is with a dental crown. We can make a tooth appear more even, straighter, and close gaps. Using a crown or dental veneer is an ideal treatment to perfect the look of your most visible front teeth.
•  Discolored: Deep intrinsic stains won't just whiten away. Crowns can cover teeth that have been discolored from fluorosis, medications that cause staining or more.
•  Worn Down: A common disorder known as Bruxism can cause severe damage to teeth quickly. The gnashing or grinding of teeth can lead to flattening and cracks. We can rebuild and strengthen your teeth with dental crowns.
•  Weakened: Teeth can become weakened due to severe decay or following root canal therapy. We may suggest strengthening the tooth by adding a protective layer. We can use a dental crown, or a partial crown known as a dental inlay or onlay to provide the necessary protection.

Capping a Dental Implant

A dental implant is a treatment that allows us to rebuild a missing root, which can then have a dental crown placed over the implant. Capping an implant allows us to create a functional tooth where one was lost. The result is a tooth that looks and feels like a natural tooth without reliance on neighboring teeth.

Part of a Dental Bridge System

A dental bridge consists of dental crowns that cap strong healthy teeth or implants with false teeth between. The crowns on either end provide the anchor which is an important part of this system, as it provides the necessary retention.

Our Dental Crowns

At Cooley Smiles, our tooth crowns are created at Northwest Lab, a local company known for producing only the highest quality dental restorations. We offer our patients two types of crowns:
•  Procera® Crowns: The Procera Crown is an all-ceramic crown made from zirconia or alumina, and are considered metal free as there are no reactive metals involved. Patients love the translucency and incredible match this product provides.
•  E-Max Crowns: The E-Max crown is also an all-ceramic crown made from a lithium disilicate, which is unique in the dental industry. Early studies indicate that they provide a more durable crown. Patients love their beautiful look, but they are a higher expense.

Once your new tooth crown has been created and matched specifically to the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth, you will come back into the office to have your crown placed.
