Invisalign® vs. Braces

Close up of a person holding an Invisalign® clear aligner tray between two fingersInvisalign® is an increasingly popular way to straighten teeth. Invisalign® uses clear, plastic aligners, so the process is not noticeable like metal braces. Invisalign® aligners are also removable, so you can eat comfortably, and brush and floss easily. Not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign®, and your specific case may require the use of metal braces.

Straighten Your Teeth Without Metal

Invisalign® lets you straighten your teeth without attracting attention. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign® does not stand out when people see your teeth. If you have questions about Invisalign®, an experienced Invisalign® dentist can tell you about the advantages of clear, plastic aligners.

Invisalign® has several advantages, including:
•  Invisalign is often more comfortable than metal braces. Most Invisalign patients experience discomfort during the first few days of wearing an aligner when the aligner is tightest. After the initial days of wear, the discomfort lessens or becomes unnoticeable.
•  Metal braces have the disadvantage of catching on gum tissue or causing irritation throughout the duration of treatment.
•  In many cases, Invisalign has a comparable treatment time compared to metal braces. The ability to see results will help you stay motivated throughout Invisalign treatment. Unlike metal braces, the clear, plastic aligners enable you to see your progress every step of the way.
•  Invisalign treats a wide range of bite conditions and alignment problems. Overbites, underbites and crossbites have been treated with Invisalign, although these conditions sometimes require metal braces. Many people have achieved a straight, healthy smile from Invisalign, and it may be the right treatment for you.

Easy to Maintain Oral Health

Invisalign® makes good oral hygiene easy. After eating and drinking with metal braces, debris gets caught in the wires and brackets. This debris is often difficult to remove. If you use Invisalign®, you remove the Invisalign® aligner while you eat and drink to keep the aligner clean, so nothing becomes stuck in the aligner. With metal braces, wires and brackets make brushing and flossing difficult. Invisalign® trays are removed so you can brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligner back in.

Invisalign® lets you practice good oral hygiene while you are straightening your teeth, and good oral hygiene helps you avoid harmful conditions like gum disease.

Finding Out if Invisalign® Is Right for You

Although Invisalign® has many benefits, not everyone is a candidate for the treatment. Some severe bite problems and misalignment can be corrected only with metal braces. In other cases, patients do not need Invisalign® or metal braces, but will benefit the most from a cosmetic procedure like porcelain veneers.
