Teeth CleaningRegular Dental CleaningsHow Important Are Professional Cleanings? We recommend that you have two dental cleanings each year (every six months). This may not seem like much, but these two appointments are critical for helping you to proactively protect your mouth from serious oral health problems. Throughout the course of the day, plaque (a sticky film that forms on your teeth) and oral bacteria build up in your mouth. Both can cause irritation that can lead to gum disease. Bacteria also produce acids that can eat away at the enamel of your teeth, which can lead to tooth decay. Both are easily removed with your toothbrush. However, there are some regions of your mouth that are harder to access than others, which can create a buildup. When plaque is left too long, it can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush. A dental cleaning is essential for removing build up on your teeth, including from the hard to reach areas, helping you to optimize your oral health. Removing Buildup From Your TeethYour dental cleaning begins with a thorough scraping of all surfaces of your teeth - front, back, chewing surfaces, between the teeth, and at the gum line - effectively removing plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris. We take the time to clean all of these spaces and remove even the most stubborn buildup. Examining Your TeethAfter we have finished scraping your teeth, we then examine your mouth thoroughly. We check for signs of damage and decay on your teeth and look over your gums for signs of redness, swelling, and any other abnormalities. This exam is important for detecting oral health issues in their earliest stages (when you may not notice them at home) and provide you with prompt, appropriate treatment to keep your mouth happy and healthy. Polishing Your TeethOnce your teeth have been examined, we finish your dental cleaning by polishing your teeth. This involves the use of an electric hand piece and a special dental polish. The polish contains abrasives that scrub your teeth clean and help to remove surface stains. We will floss your teeth as well, which will remove any lingering polish or dislodged buildup that has accumulated during your cleaning. If necessary, we can also provide you with a fluoride treatment. Benefits of a Dental CleaningDental cleanings offer several benefits beyond cleaning your teeth:
